Do I need to register for VAT if I sell on Amazon or Etsy?

If taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12 months you must register, and marketplace sales count towards that. UK-established sellers holding goods in the UK account for the VAT themselves, not the marketplace. Marketplace-liable sales — mainly goods outside the UK in consignments of £135 or less — still count towards your threshold.

What You Need to Know

What every online seller needs to get right

E-commerce accounting has moving parts that a high-street shop never deals with — multiple channels, marketplace fees and VAT across borders. Here is what we keep a close eye on for every online seller we look after.

Multi-channel bookkeeping

Each platform pays you differently, nets off its fees and reports in its own way. We bring every channel together in Xero and reconcile your payouts to the penny, so your figures reflect what actually happened, not just what landed in the bank.

Foundations

Marketplace fees & payouts

Selling fees, referral fees, advertising and refunds all come out before you are paid. If you only record the net payout, your sales and margins are wrong. We split out fees so you can see the real cost of selling on each channel.

Accuracy

Stock & cost of goods

Your profit is not your sales — it is sales less the cost of the stock you sold. We set up cost-of-goods tracking and stock valuation so you know your true gross margin and are not caught out at year end.

Profitability

UK VAT & registration

Once your taxable turnover passes the VAT threshold you must register, and some sellers benefit from registering earlier. We watch your position, advise on the right scheme and file your returns under Making Tax Digital.

Compliance

VAT One Stop Shop (OSS)

Selling goods to consumers across the EU can trigger VAT in other countries once you pass the distance-selling threshold. The One Stop Shop (OSS) lets you report it all in one return. We help you understand whether OSS applies and keep you compliant.

International

Marketplace-collected VAT

For many sales, marketplaces like Amazon and eBay collect and account for VAT on your behalf, which changes how you record the transaction. We make sure marketplace-collected VAT is treated correctly so you neither over-pay nor under-declare.

Compliance

Imports & postponed VAT accounting

Importing stock brings import VAT and duty into the picture. Postponed VAT accounting lets you account for import VAT on your return rather than paying it up front, protecting your cash flow. We set this up and keep the records straight.

International

Xero & integrations

The right tools do the heavy lifting. We connect Xero to integrations such as A2X so marketplace settlements, fees and VAT flow through automatically and accurately, cutting hours of manual data entry each month.

Automation

Year-end & true profit

We prepare your accounts and corporation tax with your stock, fees and multi-channel income all correctly treated, so your year-end figures show the true profit of the business, not a distorted picture.

Common Questions

What online sellers ask us most

It helps more than you might expect. Marketplace payouts land in your bank net of fees, refunds and reserves, so the number in your bank account isn't your real turnover. We rebuild the gross picture behind every payout, which is what HMRC actually wants to see, and it keeps your VAT and tax right.
Yes. Since January 2024 digital platforms like Amazon, eBay, Etsy and Vinted have been required to collect sellers' details and report their sales to HMRC every January. If you sell regularly, HMRC will usually already have a figure for you, so your tax return needs to line up with it.
Exports to customers outside the UK are usually zero-rated for UK VAT, but the destination country may expect its own VAT or import charges, and the EU has special schemes such as IOSS for low-value parcels. The right setup depends on what you sell and where, so we look at it properly on your first call.
Yes. We connect your sales channels to Xero using tools like A2X or Link My Books, so every payout is split into sales, fees, refunds and VAT automatically. You get accurate figures without the spreadsheets, and you can see how each channel is performing in one place.
Our fixed monthly packages start at £180 a month with the Xero subscription included. The right package depends on your sales volume and whether you're VAT registered. You'll get a clear price before you commit, and there's no separate year-end bill.
